How to Choose the Best TV for PlayStation 5
So, you’ve already decided to buy a new TV for your PS5. But before you run out and get one, some technical aspects need to be considered.
Size
The TV is the centerpiece of your home entertainment system, and it’s important to find a model that is right for you. While TVs are often purchased based on size and functionality, it’s also important to consider how much space is available in your room and the distance between you and the screen so you can see everything clearly without straining your eyes too much.
You can find TVs as small as 24-inches to 85-inches wide, with most being positioned between 50 and 60 inches. It all comes down to personal preference.
Panel Type
The type of panel that the TV uses will determine factors such as glare, contrast, and viewing angles. LED, QLED, and OLED are the most popular types of panels right now.
- LED
LED (Light Emitting Diode) is TVs’ most commonly used display technology. It uses edge-lit or back-lit LEDs to generate high-quality visuals. It is ideal for daytime viewing and is more affordable than OLEDs and QLEDs.
- QLED
QLED TVs use quantum dots to produce vibrant images with excellent brightness levels. This panel is mostly used in mid-range TV sets.
- OLED
OLEDs use a layer of organic LEDs instead of a backlight, controlling every pixel to achieve absolute black and stunning levels of contrast. It offers the best image quality and is primarily found in high-end 4K and 8K models.
Resolution
Another thing worth considering is the resolution: how many pixels does it have? The resolution comes from how many individual dots (called “pixels”) make up each image displayed on the screen; a higher resolution means more detail.
For a long time, 1080p or Full HD was considered the standard for TVs, but the industry has quickly evolved over the last few years, with 4K now being the most popular resolution for modern TVs. 4K models have over four times the number of pixels as Full HD screens, meaning objects and text look much more life-like and vivid.
Another great thing about 4K TVs is that streaming services such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Youtube have also started creating a lot of 4K content, so there is no shortage of shows, movies, and sports that you can watch in full resolution, unlike 8K TVs which still have a small library of content that can be watched in 8K resolution.
Refresh Rate
The refresh rate is the number of times a screen refreshes in a second. So if your screen refreshes 60 times per second, which is the default refresh rate for most TVs, it’s 60Hz. In gaming scenarios, higher refresh rates mean sharper image quality, smoother motion, and less motion blur for a more immersive gaming experience.
When it comes to gaming, it’s advisable to search for a TV with at least a 120Hz refresh rate to get the most out of the games that support a 120Hz refresh rate.
HDMI 2.1 Port
The PS5 uses an HDMI 2.1 connection, which allows next-gen consoles to support higher frame rates up to 120fps, Variable Refresh Rate, and Auto Low Latency Mode. Make sure that the TV at least has an HDMI 2.0 port, but you won’t be able to run both 4K and a 120Hz refresh rate at the same time.
Also, ensure that your TV has sufficient ports to connect all the required accessories. Many manufacturers add only a few HDMI ports as a cost-cutting method.
Variable Refresh Rate
VRR is similar to the normal refresh rate, but instead of telling your TV to run at the same framerate all the time, it tells your TV when to increase or decrease its framerate. This means that games could run at higher frame rates than usual or fluctuate slightly to maintain perfect synchronization with the TV for smoother gameplay and low input lag.
The PS5 will support the HDMI 2.1 version of VRR only, but not FreeSync or G-Sync, which is a similar technology.
Auto Low Latency Mode
TVs with an HDMI 2.1 port support Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). This lets you automatically switch the TV into a ‘gaming’ mode, where less image processing is applied, but every frame the PS5 creates is shown on the TV screen more quickly—making games more responsive. It’s a great feature if you often play games on TV.
Best TV for PS 5 Summary
A good TV is a crucial part of your home entertainment system. It doesn’t have to be expensive, either—there are plenty of quality options out there that won’t break the bank.
If you’re looking for something that’ll give you high-quality pictures and sound while playing on your PS5, look no further than these 10 options!
